MVE began an internship/scholarship program this summer by awarding each of its two interns a $1,000 college scholarship along with a returning internship for Summer 2008. The interns worked directly with MVE engineering teams, drafting, studying plot plans and learning programs such as AutoCAD.

"This is a great program we have started here. The interns are given real-world projects and work right alongside professional engineers" says Kirk DeLaMare, President/CEO. "It's a great opportunity for young locals interested in engineering to begin their training. In addition, we also offer financial assistance for school."

MVE's most recent interns, Matt Zahr and Kevin Smith, were the first to begin the program this summer. They spent the summer working with professional engineers on a variety of MVE projects. Zahr will be a freshman at University of California, Berkeley and Smith will be a junior at California State University, Fresno this fall. The purpose of this program is to begin recruiting local scholars and encourage them to return to the valley every summer. The interns are equipped with their own desk and computer and challenged much the same way as MVE's full-time employees.

Mid-Valley Engineering (MVE), a nearly 170 person firm with six locations throughout Northern California, Nevada and Arizona, has been inducted into Hot Firm Hall of Fame. The Zweig Letter is a publication of ZweigWhite, a consulting, research and publication firm for the AEC industry. “Each year, The Zweig Letter’s Hot Firm list recognizes the fastest-growing AEC firms in the United States and Canada” says Maureen Slocum, Group Publisher. According to Slocum, MVE has been officially welcomed into the elite group of honorees after ranking on the Hot Firm list’s Top 100 three years in a row.

MVE was first recognized by the Hot Firm list in 2004, as the 69th fastest growing firm in its industry; the firm earned the #54 spot in 2005, followed by #48 in 2006. The development solutions firm is anxiously awaiting the results of 2007’s Hot Firm rankings and expects to, once again, make its way up the list.

MVE has weathered the storm of California’s declining residential marketplace by hiring the industry’s best talent and expanding its service areas through the establishment of new office locations. MVE began its tremendous growth in late 2005 with the opening of its second office in Stockton, California. In 2006, MVE opened an additional Modesto, California office, to be utilized as its corporate headquarters, and ventured into new markets with the opening of Reno, Nevada and Scottsdale, Arizona locations. “We are pleased to say that MVE’s growth shows no signs of stopping,” says Kirk DeLaMare, President/CEO; “we have recently opened the doors to our sixth office, located in Fresno, California and are seeking additional office locations to be established in 2008.”

MVE is currently hiring and has positions available at all locations - Modesto, Stockton, Fresno, Reno and Scottsdale. The firm is searching for Land Development Project Managers, Engineers and Land Planners; interested candidates may e-mail their resumes to jobs@mve.net or send to 200 W.
MVE has been awarded a rare honor presented to only nine other firms in the U.S. The ZweigWhite firm announces their Pinnacle Award recipients this year which is awarded to firms that ranked in both their national 'HotFirm 100' and 'Best Firms to Work For' lists. These industry achievement rankings respectively acknowlege outstanding company growth and commitment to excellence as employers.

Due to MVE's dual rankings at #48 on The Zweig Letter's Hot Firm List of Fastest-Growing Firms in the nation and #10 on the CE News list of Best Firms to Work For in the nation, MVE won a Pinnacle Award, joining only a handful of other firms that also placed on both lists. MVE has made both lists for three consecutive years; however, 2006 marks the Pinnacle Award's debut.

“This award is especially appropriate because MVE's tremendous growth and its recognition as a top employer go hand in hand,” said Kirk DeLaMare, President and CEO. “We hire the best staff in the industry to provide our clients with the highest level of service. In turn, we attract the best projects, which appeal to the caliber of staff we seek to hire and retain. It's a win-win situation.”

MODESTO, CA – Mid-Valley Engineering has opened an additional Central Valley office and restructured operations to better serve its clients. The firm recently moved its administrative, operations, marketing and urban design departments to its new corporate office at 200 W. Roseburg Ave., Suite B2 in Modesto.

As a full-service land development solutions firm, MVE provides Project Management, Urban Design, Land Planning, Entitlements, Engineering, Surveying, Construction Staking, Marketing & Graphics services. Now with nearly 150 employees and recently ranked by Zweig White's HotFirm100 2006 as the 48th fastest-growing firm in the nation, the company had outgrown its facilities at 1117 L St. in Modesto . MVE's Project Management, Land Planning, Entitlement, Engineering and Surveying departments remain there and in its Stockton branch office at 10100 Trinity Parkway, Suite 440 .

MVE has also created a separate Project Management division, providing clients one point of contact from the inception to completion of their projects. Previously, managers from each department collectively handled projects at various stages.

MVE has implemented these and other changes in an effort to remain in “fighting form” – quick, competitive and at the top of its game. “We are continually working to enhance the quality and service that have made Mid-Valley the firm of choice in the Central Valley,” says Kirk DeLaMare, President and CEO. “I am excited about these new roles and the opportunities they present for exceptional client relations and continued growth.”

When Mid-Valley Engineering Inc. (MVE) opened its doors 37 years ago, its main focus was providing engineering services throughout the San Joaquin Valley. In 1996, Kirk and Cathy DeLaMare purchased the firm and aggressively expanded it into a full-service "land development solutions" company with three locations and more than 120 employees serving 11 Western states.

With two offices in Modesto and one in Stockton, MVE specializes in comprehensive project management of master-planned communities and commercial, industrial and public projects of up to 20,000 acres. Projects are taken from raw, unentitled land through the groundbreaking phase, with MVE providing urban design, land planning, entitlements, engineering, surveying and construction staking. Recently, a complete marketing, graphic design and public relations division was added.

For the past three years, the company has ranked among the nation's best civil engineering firms to work for by CE News - a key publication among civil engineers. In addition, MVE was ranked No. 48 out of the 100 fastest growing architectural, engineering and environmental consulting firms in America for 2006 (up from 54th place in 2005) by industry consulting, research and media company, ZweigWhite.

"The softening real estate market presents challenges to all businesses whose livelihood is rooted in land development, but our workload remains steady and we've even continued to grow," says Kirk DeLaMare, president and chief executive officer of MVE. "We do this by thinking proactively, planning strategically, hiring the best staff and providing a caliber of service that attracts the best clients and projects."

MVE plans to hire about 35 people this year. Openings include five California-licensed civil engineers, three senior civil designers, four landscape architects/urban designers, four project managers and five survey party chiefs. DeLaMare says there is an especially high demand for qualified civil engineers. Here's a brief sampling of open positions:

• Senior civil engineer and assistant civil engineer. Provides project management and engineering services for commercial, industrial and residential developments and assists in leading the design team.

• Senior and junior designers. Performs civil engineering design on land development projects, including streets, storm drains, sewers, etc. Prepares hydrology, hydraulic and other technical reports.

• Landscape architect/urban designer. Assists in production related to existing and proposed landscape architecture, streetscape, transportation planning, theming and monumentation for master-planned communities and land development projects.

• Project manager and assistant project manager. Provides project management for land planning through engineering services. Works with clients, subconsultants and municipalities on commercial, industrial and residential developments.

• Survey party chief. Successful candidates will have a minimum of two to five years of experience leading survey crews as well as familiarity with boundary, topographic and ALTA (American Land Title Association) surveys, GPS (global positioning systems) and construction staking.

DeLaMare says that while education and credentials are important, "more significant are a strong work ethic, character, integrity, a positive attitude and the willingness to dig in and do what needs to be done."

It's safe to say that at MVE, where much is given, much is expected. Because MVE is committed to providing the highest quality work in a timely manner, expectations and standards are high: an average workday is nine or more hours. However, employees are self-motivated, energetic and team-oriented - and are amply rewarded for their efforts with salaries higher than industry standards and generous benefits, DeLaMare says.

Employees enjoy paid medical, dental, vision, life and disability insurance, 401(k) matching, profit sharing, six weeks of time off, a health club membership and frequent social events. These benefits, along with advanced training, and the opportunity to work on high-profile projects, help create a sense of pride and loyalty among employees.

The company promotes from within, providing many opportunities for advancement.

The DeLaMares operate under three core objectives: "To make our firm recession-proof, to properly reward employees for their effort and to not stand in the way of the natural progression of growth," DeLaMare explains. "We work hard and we play hard - creating an atmosphere of teamwork, common goals and camaraderie."

"Our staff is like family," notes Cathy DeLaMare, senior vice president/corporate secretary. She says the atmosphere is one of mutual respect where everyone understands their role and pulls together to assure success. "We always want our employees to shine," Kirk DeLaMare adds. "My philosophy is, 'If you want to run the company, go for it!'"

NATICK , MA – For the third consecutive year, Mid-Valley Engineering (MVE) has ranked among the top 100 fastest-growing architectural, engineering and environmental consulting firms in the nation, this year breaking into the top 50. The Modesto-based firm ranked #48 in the nation for 2006, jumping seven spots from #54 in 2005. The ranking is determined by ZweigWhite – an industry consulting, research and publications company – through its publication The Zweig Letter Hot Firm 2006 List of fastest growing firms.

“One of the objectives that has guided Mid-Valley Engineering is our commitment to outperforming the market,” said Kirk DeLaMare, President and CEO of MVE. “We do that by hiring the most talented and skilled professionals to perform a broad range of services targeted to our clients' needs. We focus on quality, accuracy and timely turnaround, with comprehensive project management that allows clients one point of contact throughout the development process. All of this contributes to our longevity – 37 years serving the Central Valley – and sustained, strategic growth.”

Firms of all sizes and specialties were ranked first to last based on gross revenue percentage growth and real-dollar growth for the four-year period covering fiscal years 2002 to 2005.

Mid-Valley Engineering has grown extensively during that time and continues to add clients, projects and staff, recently surpassing 120 employees. The firm will open its third office later this month at 200 W. Roseburg Ave., Building B, Suite 2, Modesto. Mid-Valley currently has offices at 1117 L St. in Modesto and 10100 Trinity Parkway, Suite 440, Stockton .

“The firms that made this year's Hot Firm List should be proud,” said Mark Zweig, president and CEO of ZweigWhite. “With a record number of entries, it was the most competitive list we've ever put together. Firms that commit to revenue growth while investing in marketing, information technology and other infrastructure are usually the most successful in our industry. They have shown they have the ability to sustain their success, year after year. The hottest firms in the business – those with consistent growth and success at outperforming the economy and their peers – are the ones that attract top staff and the best clients.”

Modesto Bee - By KRISTINA SEWARD

For Kirk and Cathy DeLaMare, running a successful engineering firm is as simple as heeding Mom's old adage: Treat others as you would like to be treated.

And by treating their 95 employees well, the DeLaMares, who own Mid-Valley Engineering, have earned the title "Region's Top Employer."

Voting for The Bee's contest started Sept. 5, and over two weeks readers cast more than 200 votes for 43 employers.

"Cathy and I came to this company with the philosophy that we wanted to treat people the way we wish we had been treated as employees," said Kirk DeLaMare, 45, Mid-Valley's president and chief executive officer.

Mid-Valley Engineering has been in business in the Northern San Joaquin Valley since 1969, and the DeLaMares bought the firm in 1996.

Consider the DeLaMare's secret to being effective managers and keeping employees happy in the following Q&A with Kirk DeLaMare, Cathy DeLaMare and Erik Piller, director of land planning and marketing:

Q: Describe your company's work environment.
A: Kirk DeLaMare: "Family."
Piller: "There is a nice family atmosphere here. Kirk and Cathy make sure it's a pleasant environment where people enjoy coming to work each day. There's a lot of camaraderie among employees."

Q: What is your management philosophy?
A: Kirk DeLaMare: "Evaluating people on a daily basis. We don't have a formal evaluation process here. We evaluate our people daily — not once a year."
Piller: "We take the open-door philosophy to another level here. Kirk and Cathy's doors are always open to all employees, any time."

Q: What key changes have you made over the years to maintain a positive workplace?
A: Kirk DeLaMare: "When we got here, there were nine people, and it wasn't a very fun place. Today, there are 90 employees. The changes we've made have been dramatic. "We've tried to instill pride throughout. We went after some really nice projects. It's rewarding for employees to work with the best clients in the industry, and on high-profile projects."
Piller: "We have an open-air office for better communication, and we provide employees with the best computers and software to get their jobs done."
Cathy DeLaMare: "We provide our employees with extensive training." She added that Mid-Valley offers tuition reimbursement for employees who want to further their education. "We also have a monthly company newsletter that keeps employees informed. On the newsletter is a suggestion box, and we respond to every single suggestion." Cathy said employee suggestions range from adding another vending machine to starting a recycling program.

Q: What is one key thing your business does to keep employees happy?
A: Kirk DeLaMare: "Make them feel like they are part of the family, and make sure every employee feels like they make a difference."

Q: What do you look for when recruiting and hiring new employees?
A: Kirk DeLaMare: "Character. It's more about attitude and character than how skilled they are. If they have the right attitude, they'll learn the skill." DeLaMare added that Mid-Valley has an extensive hiring process, which begins with scrutinizing and grading résumés. Candidates then go through a phone interview, then a face-to-face interview with six managers. If the managers recommend the candidate, they meet with Kirk individually. "By investing this much time in the process, we get the best people."
Piller: "This process is for every employee, from a receptionist to a civil engineer."

Q: Money or respect: Which do you think your employees want most and why?
A: Kirk DeLaMare: "I think they want respect."
Piller: "Engineering is a pretty hot industry right now. It's competitive, and our competitors are after our people. We offer Bay Area pay in the Central Valley, but that's just part of it. A big part is the atmosphere Kirk and Cathy have built here."
Kirk DeLaMare: "If they are shown respect and feel a part, they tend to not look when somebody comes asking."

Q: What is your advice to others in management?
A: Cathy DeLaMare: "Know and listen to your people."
